The most abundant degradation products in biogas are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Initially, small amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) are also present.[1] The degradation processes transform the viscous to solid substrate into a liquid to viscous digestate with a high water content. Since only small amounts of NH3 escape from the substrate, most of the nitrogen (around 3.4 to 5.0 kg/m3) remains in the digestate.
